LOS ANGELES (January 4, 2018) – Jerde, an architecture, design and planning firm based in Los Angeles, announced today that Sharmila Tankha, AIA, is rejoining the firm as a Vice President and Design Principal. In her new position, Ms. Tankha will oversee the firm’s newly opened Orange County office and provide design leadership on mixed use and hospitality projects. Her brief departure from Jerde allowed her to explore a range of design opportunities upon starting her own firm, Starq Design in 2015.  Sharmila first joined Jerde in August 1994, where served as project lead for Morongo Casino Resort and Spa in California and Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas, Nevada among several other notable international projects.

“We are thrilled to have Sharmila back on our team.  She is a tremendously talented professional and an outstanding individual of integrity and commitment.  As a company, we made the decision in 2017 to establish an office in Orange County to better serve our client base and have a more visible presence in the market.  The entire area of Orange County has recently experienced economic growth resulting in demand for development services.  We have no doubt that Sharmila will lead the office to great success in 2018 and beyond.” said John Simones, Design Director and CEO of Jerde.

Sharmila brings over 22 years of experience in hospitality design and mixed use, sensitively weaving together complementary aspects of hospitality, retail and entertainment in delivering world class destinations.  After her first term at Jerde, Sharmila served as the Associate Vice President and Design Director at WATG and was the creative force behind numerous and significant projects throughout the US, Asia, Middle East and Africa. Most notable of her achievements, providing design leadership to WATG’s largest undertaking to date, SJM’s Grand Lisboa Palace, an integrated resort on the Cotai Strip in Macau comprising of multiple hotels (including the first ever Palazzo Versace in Asia), with casino, retail, leisure and cultural components due to open in early 2019.

“The level of talent and creative thinking at Jerde is outstanding, and I am excited and honored to be back amongst this exceptional group. I look forward to growing our Southern California presence and continuing to serve our clients with the highest standards,” said Sharmila.

Sharmila received her Master’s in Building Science degree from University of Southern California, Los Angeles in 1994 and her Bachelor’s degree in Architecture from the School of Planning and Architecture in New Delhi, India in 1990. She is a licensed architect in the state of California.
