Istanbul's Kanyon, opening in spring 2006, is a city-within-a-city, a diverse mix of residential and office, retail stores, restaurants, and entertainment components designed to provide a stage for "urban theater" and promote interaction among its residents and visitors. Jerde accomplished this by organizing the project as a series of districts -- Entertainment Sphere, Office Plaza, Garden Court and Performance Plaza -- connected by an interior street, or "canyon," that traverses the site and includes a variety of courtyards and terraces. The functional relationships of the uses and their relationship to the city establish the basic planning armature for the project. The 25-story office building is located along a major boulevard to give it a primary presence within the city. The four levels of retail extend the full length of the site and create a podium for residences above. The retail has multiple entrances at different levels that knit the project to the city at various street locations and to the below-grade subway station. The 179 apartment residences above the retail are formed in terraces; their location and massing give them both privacy and dramatic views into the project below. Kanyon's design is conceived as a composition of bold, memorable architectural forms, complemented by unique building materials. For example, the canyon flows across the project, carving out soft curves through the buildings’ forms, featuring a stratification of light earth tone colored stone with accent bands of painted copper metal. The gentle curve of the office tower facade reinforces the graceful flow of the canyon and will be sheathed in a glass curtain wall.
