East Harlem City of Dreams
- Harlem, New York 2006
Ciudad de Sueños (City of Dreams) is designed to embody Harlem’s distinct heritage as a source of creative expression and communal inspiration and to celebrate its multi-cultural legacy in a way that will captivate the hearts and imaginations of residents of Harlem, New York City, and surrounding areas, as well as tourists from around the world. Similar to the way Latino and African-American cultures of Harlem have come together to create a vibrant community, Ciudad de Sueños is formed as a collection of unique architectural shapes that are integrated into a dynamic composition. The iconic architectural design creates an identifiable gateway that will be visible from the Triborough Bridge and recognizable as a global destination.
The highly visible corner of 125th Street and Third Avenue houses a 14-level tower containing 433,000 square feet of broadcast, production and executive offices for Latino and African-American media and entertainment. A 1,000-seat performance center is also planned to showcase Latino and African-American performers and ultimately host music awards, film festivals, and other national and international events.
To further support continuing education and the arts, Ciudad de Sueños includes a 23,700 square-foot university extension campus and 16,500 square-foot dance school. To make Ciudad de Sueños a 24-hour destination, approximately 782,000 square feet, is dedicated to affordable and market-rate housing offering a variety of high-rise units and low-rise live/work lofts where artists can create and sell their work, while capturing views of the river and city.
