Steve Wynn, then chairman of Mirage Resorts, had a single objective: design "simply the world's finest hotel." A hotel that would attract those who normally bypass Las Vegas for exclusive European resorts. So Jerde returned with the defining Las Vegas resort. Bellagio set a new standard of luxury along the Las Vegas Strip. It also paid record dividends. Like any new destination, Bellagio attracted plenty of attention when it opened. Approximately 80,000 people visited in the first 18 hours. In the first 20 days, retail sales at the upscale Via Bellagio reached $9 million or the equivalent of $1,800 per square foot per year. Bellagio also set a new record for Nevada casino quarterly revenues with $244 million in the first quarter. And the record-high revenues were achieved in just 77 days, two weeks less than a full business quarter.
